What is the FMS?
The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) was developed to help identify people that might be at risk of injury or have weaknesses that may impact performance. It incorporates seven different movement patterns that are scored according to the symmetry, mobility, and stability the person demonstrates. These movement patterns are necessary for good function.
Who Can Benefit from a Functional Movement Assessment Screen?
The FMS is simply a measurement tool so anyone can benefit from an evaluation. You do not need to be an athlete to have a movement screen.
How does the FMS help me?
The FMS helps us to see how an individual, no matter their age, is moving in everyday life. It identifies movement patterns that you move well in and patterns that can be developed or loaded. An FMS helps ensure that you have a solid movement foundation and can take on more complex exercises or demanding activities. This helps foster an environment for you to reach your movement goals.
How can the FMS help me?
When people have weaknesses or imbalances, it can cause compensations and may put them at an increased risk of injury. It may also affect their performance during sports or daily activities. Based on the results of the movement screening, specific, individualized exercises will be added to your therapy or rehabilitation plan to improve movement and performance. If you are an athlete, the FMS can also be used as a pre-season screen for their athletes.
What does a Functional Movement Screening look like?
The screening takes about ten minutes. During that time you’ll be asked to perform specific exercises that require mobility and stability. These movements may include: Squats, hurdle steps, lunges, leg raises push-ups, rotary stability and shoulder mobility. It is also possible that in-clinic we will assess different movements and have an assessment of your posture or your shoe wear patterns too depending on your needs.
